The rated box question
The single most common problem is a ceiling fan hung from a box that was never intended to hold one. Light fixtures weigh a few pounds and hang still. A fan weighs fifteen to fifty pounds and applies a constant vibrating, twisting load, and a plastic pancake box nailed to the side of a joist will not hold it indefinitely. Fan-rated boxes are marked as such and are mechanically braced.
Where the existing box is not rated, the fix does not require opening the ceiling. An expanding brace bar goes up through the existing hole, spans between the joists, and locks in place with a saddle that carries a proper rated box. It takes a few extra minutes and it is the difference between a fan that is fine for twenty years and one that ends up on the floor.
High ceilings and foyers
Two-story entry foyers are standard in the subdivisions built across Apex and Cary through the 2000s, and they all have the same problem: a light fixture eighteen to twenty-two feet above a staircase, which is exactly where a normal ladder cannot be footed safely. Only if the box in the ceiling is fan-rated. A standard light box is not built to carry a moving load and a fan hung on one will eventually work loose. The usual solution is a retrofit brace bar that goes in through the existing hole and spans between the joists — no ceiling damage, and it makes the location fan-ready.
Why does my fan wobble?
Most often it is a blade set slightly out of balance, a loose canopy or downrod pin, or a mounting bracket that was never fully tight. A balancing kit sorts the blades.
